The Call of the Running Tide – The Littoral Zone has engaged twelve artists, to produce new environmental artworks for this major exhibition at the Tanks Arts
Centre. Curated by artist Jill Chism in conjunction with Tanks Art staff, the participants are responding to the issues and biodiversity of 10 intertidal zones along
the FNQ coastline: the Littoral Zone, between high and low tides.
As creative activators, these artists are exploring both biodiversity and environmental issues. While some artists are focusing on revealing ecosystems and regeneration,
others are exploring problems with waste, pollution, and toxicity through a localised, site-specific approach at their local beach.
With a more refined focus on the coast in the Littoral Zone, this new stage of CRT-LZ is exploring the biodiversity, impacts and issues facing the coastline at 10 sites/
beaches from Cow Bay in the Daintree Rainforest/ Far Northern region to the Cairns Esplanade and shores of Trinity Inlet to the south with 5 artists participating from the
Douglas Shire, and 7 artists from the Cairns region.
The final works, based on intimate observations of selected sites and information from environmental groups and researchers, are presented as either multimedia
artworks or as installations.
The participants are either professional artists: mid-career and established, or emerging artists with experienced artists mentoring emerging artists.
The Tanks Arts Centre, through Cairns Regional Council, has partnered with CRT- LZ artists to host and present the exhibition in the gallery. The exhibition is supported by a Regional Arts Fund Grant, with 2 artists having received Regional Arts Fund Development grants.
The inaugural Call of the Running Tide Environmental Art Festival took place over 10 days, in Port Douglas in 2019, (26 regional artists participating) and in 2021, (37 artists). Artists presented ephemeral artworks with environmental themes in various locations with workshops and performances. This was followed by a satellite exhibition at NorthSite Contemporary Arts, Cairns, in 2021 (17 artists).
